Barrel Select Montepulciano 2020

Intense aroma's of spices, cherries and mocha with subtle waft's of coffee granules.  The palate is deep in colour with flavours of plum's, boysenberry and herbal notes.  After the initial wave of berry fruits, the tannin's arrive with glory of a roman legion soft and fine but with just the right amount of intensity and a long savoury finish.
Food Matches:                  This wine is best served as an aperitif or alternatively would perfectly accompany a variety of Pizza, Pasta but has tannin's that will compliment with any red meat.
Winemakers Notes:       Montepulciano is a red Italian grape that's is widely planted in central and Southern Italy.  Over recent years Australian winemakers have seen the varieties’ ability to thrive in the Australian climate and especially in the cooler region of SA.  It is a late ripening variety that produces deeply coloured wines due to the low skin to juice ratio and a large amount of pigmented tannins.
Werriga Vineyard located on the seaside of Mundulla and was chosen as a source of replacement fruit during the challenging 2020 vintage.  It experiences very similar cooler climatic condition’s very similar to the Adelaide Hills.  It also aligns with the new direction of the New Era wine band in showcasing some new experimental varietals.  The 2019/20 ripening season commenced with a warm to hot start which thankfully cooled into a much milder January and early February.  Despite the heat spike pre-Christmas, thankfully the cool days and low night temperatures that followed for the ripening and harvest period allowed for ideal, slow flavour development with very little to no disease pressure.  This year also saw a nice strong Bonney Upwelling.  With ocean temperatures dropping just as harvest season commenced and it allowed the region to have a longer cooler vintage with excellent retention of natural acid and intense cool climate varietal characters.
After receival in the winery it was clear that the fruit was busting at its skin with intense colour and flavour and aroma's partly due to crop levels being down to 30% from normal, but this is ideal for maximum Terroir and varietal character.  After a gentle crushing and destemming the grape must was transferred to 1 tonne open fermenters were it was inoculated with consorizo del vino brunello di montalcino BM45 Tuscan yeast and hand plunged three times daily for 10 days.  After which it was pressed into aged Fench Oak hogsheads for 12 months after which it was racked and bottled without any fining or filtration to retain maximum flavour and Terroir.
